Next up at the Agri-Center: Antique show celebrates history
The 18th Annual California Antique Farm Equipment Show, showcasing the agriculture industry's heritage, will be held April 15-17 at the International Agri-Center. This year’s show highlights Holt, Best and Cat.
This show features over 900 exhibitors from throughout California and the United States, displaying their antique tractors, engines and other antique farm equipment. Each year the daily Antique Tractor and Truck Parade draws over 400 entries, and the parade has become one of the highlights of the show.
This family event features a Kiddie Korral and Pedal Pull Tractor Contest, an arts and crafts area, performances by local organizations from karate to dance, a very popular swap meet of tractor parts, a steak barbecue and concert on Saturday night and more.
The annual rib cook-off has also become a hot item during the antique show, as contestants vie for top honors and cash in beef and pork divisions.
“This event has met the original objective – to honor and learn from our past – but it’s also done much more,” noted volunteer Chairman Doug Peltzer. “The antique show is now great, affordable family entertainment, a chance to recognize local youth groups and a fun way to raise funds for the Antique Farm Equipment Museum.”
The California Antique Farm Equipment Show began in 1993, as part of a vision to celebrate the region’s rich agriculture heritage.
Long-time International Agri-Center volunteers George Watte and Robby Soults traveled to Vista, California, to attend an antique farm equipment show. On their journey home, they said, “We oughta have a show like this, we’ve got the place.”
Watte had a few pieces of antique equipment he had been collecting over the years, and a number of other Agri-Center volunteers shared the same passion. Their dream was to host an event featuring antique farm equipment to show today’s generation the equipment of yesterday and give them the opportunity to learn about how farming has changed throughout the years.
Watte served as the chairman for the first two years the California Antique Farm Equipment Show was held. The first show was a huge success, and by the third year, it had tripled in size.
Today, in addition to the annual antique show, the Antique Farm Equipment Museum is open year-round at Heritage Complex on the grounds of the International Agri-Center. The museum, and AgVentures! Learning Center, provide visitors of all ages the chance to learn about agriculture of the past and today. A fundraiser for the museum is held during the Antique Farm Equipment Show each year.
Admission to the California Antique Farm Equipment Show is $8; children under 12 are admitted free of charge.

44th World Ag Expo Earns Rave Reviews
Exhibitors awash in sales, the first-ever FFA Assembly, huge crowds and sunny skies created a memorable 44th edition of World Ag Expo.
The sunshine and the reputation of World Ag Expo drew a sea of attendees to opening day – and the good news is that they were looking to buy.
OXBO International’s Brent Borboa said the week is “off to a good start” on opening day, with “the right people here today – the decision-makers.” He is finding a lot of interest in his product, and “more optimism” this year.
Mike Caruso, with Top-10 New Product winner AMSOIL, called the show “awesome.”
First-time exhibitor Johnny Georges of Tree T Pee had to retreat to his rental car just to get some rest from the flood of buyers and interested distributors. He has been “overwhelmed” by the interest from distributors and a “continuing flow” of buyers interested in his citrus product.
The sunshine apparently had attendees thinking about summer recreation, as the Etco Marine display was abuzz with activity. Owner Chad Borba said he already had an offer on a boat from an out-of-state buyer.
First-time exhibitor Cirrus Aircraft brought a full-sized mockup of their personal aircraft and by the close of the second day already had a buyer. The aircraft sell for about half a million dollars.
Attendee and Forage Challenge award winner Kelly Callahan, of Royal City, Wash., has been to World Ag Expo for the past 12 years. He and his family farm 3,000 acres, operate a 1,500-cow dairy, raise apples, operate a gravel pit and a construction company and have a well-drilling enterprise. To equip those businesses, the family “spends about a quarter of a million dollars” on equipment in the year after World Ag Expo.
“We do all our research here, and then go back home and buy,” Callahan said. “Our equipment needs are so diverse we really have to see the whole show.”
World Ag Expo is all about business and education – with some fun thrown in for good measure. This year’s edition featured a two-night concert series, an FFA Assembly for more than 2,000 students and a flash mob dance on Median Street, as well as cooking demonstrations and fashion shows at the World Ag Women Pavilion.
“One of the things that makes World Ag Expo unique is the diversity of exhibits, the diversity of attendees and the quality of the attendees,” noted 2011 Chairman Lee Coito. “From rice to citrus, dairy to agrichemicals, our exhibitors show it all, along with some surprises like personal aircraft. And the beauty of it is, exhibitors of all types find success here.”
The competition in the Forage Challenge, sponsored by Mycogen Seeds, gets tougher every year, as the word spreads and more farmers enter. The first-place winners this year are:

Putting the ‘world’ in World Ag Expo
The international reputation of World Ag Expo drew 1,132 registered attendees from 63 nations by the end of the day Wednesday, and 50 exhibitors from 13 nations, including China, Turkey, Netherlands, Austria and India.
A farm family from Ghana was enjoying the hospitality of the International Business Center (IBC) on Wednesday, resting after their first tour of the show grounds and planning their strategy for the second tour.
Patriarch of the farming operation, AA Salam Akate, attended World Ag Expo previously, and this time brought his family, partners in the diversified operation. They grow maize and citrus, and have livestock and poultry. They were impressed by the size of ag equipment on display and were enjoying learning how to grow and harvest more efficiently – and hoping to purchase equipment.
A committee of 127 volunteers offers translation services in about 20 different languages and dialects.
Exhibitors are encouraged to visit the IBC to take advantage of the trade lead exchange board and meet prospective international buyers and dealers. The IBC is located on the second floor of Heritage Complex.

Looking ahead to another great Expo!
Patty Colson, 2012 Chairman - The 1,500 volunteers, staff and I hope you had a great week here at World Ag Expo. We are grateful for all the hard work you have done preparing your exhibits for the many attendees we saw this week. We had many outstanding activities this week, including some exciting new additions to the expo for the whole family. A very special welcome to our new beef exhibitors.
We began the week with our new Concerts for a Cause Series, with Blake Shelton, after the Expo on Tuesday night, and on Wednesday evening, David Nail. We also welcomed many FFA groups on Wednesday morning. Our World Ag Women entertained those who were interested in cooking demonstrations with speakers from the community and a fashion show. There were also over 60 seminars held in the Seminar Center.
The grounds and spaces were packed with exhibitors displaying the newest equipment from all over the world. It was great to see new exhibitors this year joining us for their first time.
I hope you all had the opportunity to visit our New Products Pavilion, to see the Top-10 new product winners and Forage Challenge display. Wine and Cheese was available next door in the Wine and Cheese Pavilion for our exhibitors to treat their customers to a glass of wine and cheese along with some fine finger appetizers.
We are looking forward to seeing all of you again next year for our Big 45th year. There are many exhibitors who have been with us from the very beginning, and many others who have joined in over the years. Together, you have all helped our show become one of the biggest and best in the world of agriculture.

Expo announces big give-away winners
Honda has sponsored a daily give-away of the Big Red MUV for 2011 World Ag Expo, and today also featured the give-away of a Trimble Yuma Rugged Tablet Computer.
Both exhibitors are turning attendees into very lucky winners.
Tuesday's winners were a "stunned" Jane and Ray Yeung, who farm 3,000 acres of processing and fresh tomatoes, alfalfa, cucumber seed and alfalfa seed. The couple already owns four Honda Fourtrax vehicles.
"We've been coming to World Ag Expo for 20 years," Mrs. Yeung noted. "We always learn something new here. Sometimes we make purchases, and it's a big schmooze-fest."
Wednesday's MUV winner was Kelly Kelley of Frazier Park, Ca., who recently purchased a 5-acre horse ranch.
"Oh my gosh, you¹re kidding me! We won the Honda? This is so exciting!" Kelley exclaimed.
Kelley attended World Ag Expo for the first time last year and thought it was great. She came back again on opening day to see new products and learn more about what she needs for her operation.

Exhibitors sail through a day of sales
World Ag Expo was crowded today, and exhibitors were praising not just the quantity but also the quality of attendees.
"We had very qualified customers come by our exhibit spaces yesterday and today and ask very good questions," said Chris Taylor of Trimble's Agriculture Division.
"Being one of the Top-10 New Product Award recipients brought us great media coverage, and people came looking for us after seeing our product in the news. The foot traffic has been great and we're definitely seeing our target market."
Mike Caruso, With AMSOIL, is "learning a lot about agriculture" from his experience at World Ag Expo. "I didn¹t realize how big this show is!" AMSOIL is a Top-10 New Product Award winner, AMSOIL, and this is the first year the company has exhibited.
"We have met a lot of people interested in our product. It has been an awesome experience."
New Product winner T-HEXX Dragonhyde has been an exhibitor for the past eight years. World Ag Expo allows the company to see the decision-makers and a concentrated number of dairymen, noted Megan DeRose.
"We appreciate the beautiful Dairy Center, especially with the new floor that's really nice. We have gotten a lot of media attention and we expect to see sales increase in California, which is our goal."

FFA leaves its mark on World Ag Expo
More than 2,000 FFA students descended upon the World Ag Expo show grounds today to participate in the FFA Assembly and create the first-ever expo Flash Mob.
The Assembly featured inspirational speaker and country music artist Michael Peterson sharing his life story encouraging students to develop a plan for their lives. His “Tag, You’re It” program also includes an interactive web site designed to help youth create a “blueprint for success” in their lives.
The FFA students then turned Median Street into a sea of blue jackets for the expo Flash Mob, complete with choreographed dance. Watch the video on Facebook, and "like" if you're not already following us.
The students then toured the show grounds to see the latest in ag technology and visit the Hilvers Career and Education Center, sponsored by agcareers.com, to visit with university representatives and learn about careers in agriculture.

Concerts for a Cause continues tonight
The first-ever Concerts for a Cause series featuring Grammy-nominated David Nail with Stealing Angels tonight is a fund-raiser for the agriculture program at the new College of the Sequoias campus in Tulare.
Tickets are available at the door at the new Entertainment Pavilion for $65, $50 and $25.
Local artists Chaparral will perform during a pre-concert event to celebrate the release of their first CD. Stealing Angels takes the stage at 6:30 p.m.
Blake Shelton kicked off the concert series Tuesday evening and surprised the audience with a performance by Miranda Lambert. Thousands of country music fans enjoyed a great evening of music.
“The goal is to further the message of California agriculture and its multi-billion-dollar contribution to the state’s economy,” Beachy explained. “Family-owned farms and ranches across the state are economic engines for most small to medium-sized communities. By supporting our farmers and ranchers we keep thousands of other support services going strong and keep people employed.”
Suggestions of how the proceeds from the event will be allocated to promote agriculture awareness will come from a group of agricultural businesses and support industries, from trucking to banking, all working with the International Agri-Center, a 501(c)3 organization.
“The International Agri-Center’s mission from inception has been to support agriculture through education, by linking buyer and seller, and by sharing important agricultural information,” Beachy added. “Now we can support California ag and ag families through great country music!”

World Ag Expo Announces Forage Challenge Winners
A total of $18,000 in prizes was awarded today at World Ag Expo to the winners of the 2011 World Ag Expo Forage Challenge, presented by Mycogen Seeds.
Finalists were chosen out of 37 entries from nine Western states that entered the challenge. The competition challenged farmers and ranchers to enter the bounty of their labors to see who produced the highest-quality forages in the West.
Samples of the finalists’ alfalfa hay and corn silage entries are on display in World Ag Expo’s New Product Center on “Q” St. and Expo Lane during the Expo. Attendees also can attend seminars to learn more about forage production.
"We salute the winners and finalists for their dedication to high-quality forage production. As presenting sponsor of the World Ag Expo Forage Challenge, Mycogen Seeds is pleased to have the opportunity to recognize these growers and provide information to help improve forage quality throughout the West,” says Greg Cannon, silage marketing specialist at Mycogen Seeds.
Lallemand Animal Nutrition North America sponsored the $18,000 in contest awards and prizes. First place winners in all three categories received $3,000, while second place winners were awarded $2,000 and third place winners $1,000.
“Forages are a major component of all dairy rations and producing high-quality preserved forages is therefore a major key to ensuring profitability, says Robert Charley, PhD, Forage Products Manager, Lallemand Animal Nutrition, North America.
“Our participation in, and support of, the Forage Challenge at World Ag Expo is a key part of our efforts to help spread awareness of these key facts. In addition, Lallemand Animal Nutrition sales and technical support staff and distribution partners work closely with producers to help improve forage management and ensure maximum quality of their forage stocks. We hope to see the Forage Challenge grow to become a major event that will provide a focal point to truly challenge producers to achieve top quality in all their preserved forages. ”

Exhibitors enjoy busy first day
The sunshine and the reputation of World Ag Expo drew a sea of attendees to opening day – and the good news is that they were looking to buy.
Forage Challenge award winner Kelly Callahan, of Royal City, Wash., has been to World Ag Expo for the past 12 years.
The sunshine apparently had attendees thinking about summer recreation, as the Etco Marine display was abuzz with activity. Owner Chad Borba said he already had an offer on a boat from an out-of-state buyer.
OXBO International’s Brent Borboa said the week is “off to a good start” with “the right people here today – the decision-makers.” He is finding a lot of interest in his product, and “more optimism” this year.

International Agri-Center
Welcome to the 44th edition of the World Ag Expo. The staff and volunteers have been busy all year working toward this week, and we’re really excited that it’s here. For those of you in the Farm Credit Dairy Center, you will be pleased to know that we have made a few more improvements to the building. We have replaced the remaining fabric siding with sheet metal and we have cemented the entire floor.
Also new for 2011 are a couple of added features that we are really excited about. We’ve added a new Beef and Livestock Pavilion also known as Pavilion D. From our survey work the past several years, we know that there are more people attending World Ag Expo that have a high interest in the Beef industry. There will be live cattle demonstrations by several different exhibitors demonstrating the latest in beef-related technology.
Another exciting event is our Concerts for a Cause concert series. On Tuesday night of World Ag Expo, we will feature CMA Male Vocalist of the Year award winner Blake Shelton, along with Jason Jones, and on Wednesday night we’ll have David Nail and Stealing Angles on stage in the new Entertainment Pavilion located on the southwest end of the grounds. You may purchase tickets in the Registration Pavilion located in space J 30.
On behalf of the volunteers and staff of World Ag Expo, I want to thank you for being a part of the 2011 World Ag Expo. As always, we look forward to helping you make the best return on your investment at World Ag Expo.
